Day Eighteen: Writing Songs

I have to say I’ve always had trouble finishing songs.  Many songs have built slowly over a period of months or years until they resemble something complete and I can finally see where to tie the knots.  The idea for a song usually arrives quickly and all else must be dropped and everything written down, for minutes or hours.  As soon as a wall is hit I have to stop or risk burning out on the entire thing.  The trick is to know when to return.  Too soon and you repeat your same bad ideas until no new direction is visible.  Too long and it’s much harder to rebuild the momentum that got you there in the first place.  I have at least three songs in this stage right now.  They are my frustration tonight.
